Great oral hygiene and ongoing preventive care are the best way to maintain a healthy smile that will last a lifetime.

Most of us are aware that poor dental hygiene can lead to tooth decay, gum disease and bad breath, but not brushing your teeth could also affect your overall health.

Our mouths are teeming with bacteria — most of it harmless — and daily brushing and flossing helps to keep these bacteria under control. Without proper oral hygiene, however, bacteria can reach levels that might lead to infections, such as tooth decay and gum disease. Both can be prevented with regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups.

Here are a few important things you can do to keep your healthy smile:

  • Brush your teeth for at least two minutes, twice a day.
  • Floss every day.
  • Schedule regular dental checkups at least every 6 months, or as recommended.
  • Keep an eye on your gums to make sure they’re pink and tightly hugging your teeth (your gums should not bleed when you brush).
  • Eat a healthy diet.
  • Replace your toothbrush every few months, or sooner if it’s frayed.
  • Stop smoking. Smoking puts you at risk for oral cancer and infection.

Our goal at Naples General & Cosmetic Dentistry is to keep the smiles of our Naples and Southwest Florida patients happy and healthy by providing you with the highest standard of care.
